Thy Kingdom Come – the Book of Revelation
Class 8 - The Church at Philadelphia
In order to understand the link between Philadelphia and the church located there, we first must understand the history of the city’s founding, for it is a tale of two brothers: Eu-men-es and his younger brother, At-talus.
Recall that the seven cities of Revelation are part of the ancient empire of Lydia, later called Pergamum.
The king of Pergamum was Attalus I Soter. Upon his death his older son, Eumenes, became king.
His significant accomplishment was to closely align his nation to the Roman Empire and its wealth.
Ultimately, this alliance called upon Eumenes to bring his army to assist the Romans in dealing with some of Rome’s enemies.
After one battle, it was rumored that Eumenes had been killed in battle.
Back in Pergamum, his younger brother, Attalus the Second (220-138 bc) assumed rulership and also, married Eumenes’ widow.
Like a story in a novel, after some time, Eumenes returns alive back to Pergamum. Rather than fight his brother, Attalus II relinquished the throne and his wife to Eumenes, motivated by his brotherly love.
