Thy Kingdom Come – the Book of Revelation

Class 2 - January 4 & 11, 2026

The Portrait of the Lord Jesus Christ

How do you picture Jesus Christ?

As a baby with naturally curly hair, as pictured by this Roman Catholic Church in Wales?

As a weak, effeminate man, barely able to carry a cross?

Today, let us see how the Bible describes our Lord, for this is the only correct and true portrait of Him as He is today and forever.

The 1 Portrait of a Man in Revelation 1 - A Fellow Believer

In Revelation 1:9-20, we have 2 significant portraits of men.

The first portrait is of a fellow believer, who was just like us – v.9.

I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Remember, he was the beloved disciple who wrote the Gospel of John, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd John, and the book of Revelation.

John began his life’s work as a fisherman and by the time he wrote Revelation, he was an old man exiled from his church.

In verse 9, John’s brief testimony reflects what changed him from a fisherman to a mighty apostle - it was the word of God and Jesus’ testimony that brought about his transformation. A shared experience with us, as an average person changed dramatically by the words of God – Romans 10:17...faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the world of God.

Notice his spiritual state in verse 10:

I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,

The phrase, “in the Spirit,” is much more that indicating that John was walking in the Spirit, for he received this unique revelation directly from the Holy Spirit by inspiration.

Always remember that John was just an ordinary man who loved and walked with the Lord from the day that Christ called him. No, we will not be given revelations like he was given, but we can be illumined by the Spirit to understand this book, if we too, walk with our Lord.......
